A 15-year-old boy who had a "worrying interest in knives" has been jailed for life - with a minimum of 13 years behind bars - for stabbing another teenager to death on the way home from school.

Bardia Shojaeifard was named for the first time today by a judge shortly before he was sentenced for the murder of Alfie Lewis, also 15.

Alfie was stabbed to death in front of pupils leaving a primary school in the Horsforth area of Leeds last November.

The court heard Shojaeifard - who was 14 at the time of the murder - was an "outwardly normal" boy.

He admitted stabbing Alfie with a 13cm-long knife he had brought from home, but denied murder and claimed he was acting in self-defence when he pulled out the blade.

Shojaeifard was found guilty of murdering Alfie by a Leeds Crown Court jury in April.

Mr Justice Cotter removed reporting restrictions that prevented him from being identified on Friday.

He said lifting the defendant's anonymity would help in the "vitally important debate about the scourge of knife crime, among young people in particular".

Mr Justice Cotter said the public would be wondering how a young boy "from a loving and supportive family" could commit such an "extraordinary" crime "without forewarning or any warning signs save for some pictures of knives on his phone".

Alfie was stabbed twice - with a chest wound penetrating his heart and causing "catastrophic bleeding", West Yorkshire Police said.

He was pronounced dead in hospital a short time later.

Eyewitnesses had said Shojaeifard had approached Alfie and attacked him without provocation - with the victim trying to back away.

Alfie was heard saying "chill out" and "what are you doing?" as Shojaeifard swung at him with the knife.

The attacker later ran off and left the knife near the scene, and was arrested at his home about an hour later.

Detectives believe Shojaeifard had been carrying the kitchen knife all day, and had intended to seek Alfie at home time.

Leeds Crown Court had heard that there had been two previous incidents involving both boys - including one last July that saw Alfie intervene in a fight Shojaeifard was having with another boy.

A week before the deadly attack - on Halloween - Shojaeifard had walked past Alfie's house with a bag of fireworks, prompting Alfie to say to him: "Give me the bag or something worse than last time is going to happen."

Following the sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson said: "Shojaeifard targeted Alfie in a premeditated and planned attack using murderous violence to end his young life, for which there can be no excuse or justification.

"His actions have robbed Alfie of his future and left his family and friends absolutely devastated. No sentence will ever compensate them for their loss."

Alfie's mother Heather Lane addressed Shojaeifard directly as she read her victim impact statement in court.

"No sentence will ever be enough for what you have done. I will never, ever forgive you," she said.

Ms Lane sobbed as she said: "Alfie was my heart and when he was stabbed in the heart it killed me too."

Alfie's older brother Antony described him as a "loving and caring little mate" who "never deserved what happened to him".

Mr Justice Cotter told Shojaeifard: "He had a long life ahead of him and you took that away.

"Knives have stolen so many lives, and you and others must understand how dangerous this obsession is.

"Without your interest in knives, Alfie would be here today."

What makes Cupid’s arrow hit the right target?

In sync: The biological underpinnings of romantic attraction and bonding are studied by Hebrew University psychologists

By JUDY SIEGEL-ITZKOVICH, Jerusalem Post,  JUNE 20, 2024

What makes people fall in love? Surely the way people act and look are involved. Romantic bonding is a central feature of human life and is connected to well-being, physical health, mental health, happiness, life satisfaction, development, and sexual desire. Yet, the neural and behavioral mechanisms that determine why we are attracted to selected individuals, and not others, are still unknown.

The mechanisms of romantic bonding in humans are largely unknown, but now, Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU) researchers have found that alignment of physiological responses between individuals – heart rate, respiration, and skin conductance – are also very influential in whether Cupid’s arrow has hit the spot.

When two people are physiologically in sync, their bodily functions align in a way that is measurable and often occurs naturally during interactions. The findings show that some people are “super synchronizers” who naturally synchronize well in social and nonsocial contexts and thus are perceived as more romantically appealing. This paves the way for further research into how physiological and behavioral synchrony can broadly shape human relationships, said Dr. Shir Atzil and her team from HU’s psychology department.

The role of synchrony in romantic attraction

This research aimed at answering two key open questions about the role of synchrony in romantic attraction. First, does synchrony have a role in eliciting attraction? Alternatively, synchrony can result from an increased attraction that raises the motivation to synchronize. Such interactions can also be bi-directional. Second, are there individual differences in the ability to synchronize that determine attractiveness?

The research integrated both experimental and observational methods to find out how physiological synchrony influences romantic appeal. An online experiment involving 144 participants showed that inducing synchrony between actors significantly boosted their attractiveness ratings. The study has just appeared in the journal Communications Psychology under the title “Social and nonsocial synchrony are interrelated and romantically attractive.”

Further investigations in a lab-based speed-dating scenario with 48 participants identified “super synchronizers” who were consistently rated as more romantically appealing, underscoring the potential of physiological alignment to significantly enhance perceived attractiveness.

“Our findings suggest that the ability to synchronize with others might not just be a social skill but could stem from more fundamental sensori-motor abilities that require an individual to adapt themselves to dynamic inputs,” said Atzil. This adaptability, whether in response to social cues or rhythmic patterns, is perceived as attractive, potentially because of the beneficial physiological consequences a synchronous partner can have."

The study proposes that synchronized physiological states can improve regulation across various bodily systems, making these interactions more fulfilling. Additionally, effective synchrony may indicate cognitive and evolutionary advantages, suggesting a deeper biological importance of this trait.

The team concluded that their study “not only advances our understanding of romantic attraction but also paves the way for further exploration into how physiological and behavioral synchrony can shape human relationships in broader contexts.”

Despite these promising insights, Atzil concedes the limitations of the research. “The cross-sectional design of our study limits our ability to draw definitive conclusions about the long-term stability of synchrony as a trait and its causal relationship with romantic attraction. Future research will delve into these dynamics more deeply, especially considering the implications of synchrony in sustained romantic relationships and across different sexual orientations.”

DNTCCC Cocktail Corner 🍸🍹πŸ₯‚πŸ₯ƒ πŸΎπŸ€©πŸ•“: Pimm’s: an alcoholic fruit drink that keeps English summers afloat

Pimm’s: an alcoholic fruit drink that keeps English summers afloat

Pimm’s time is summertime.

Strange to relate – strange, that is, to anyone born and raised in the UK – the name “Pimm’s” means zilch to many Americans. But to Brits, Pimm’s is synonymous with the English summer. Its only rival as a favorite summertime treat is strawberries and cream, which reaches its frenzied zenith of popularity at the Wimbledon tennis tournament in June.

What is Pimm’s? It is an alcohol-based fruit drink that keeps the English summer social season afloat. From the Royal Ascot races to Wimbledon, from Henley Royal Regatta to Cowes week, from the Chelsea Flower Show to the Glyndebourne opera, Pimm’s is always on tap, and always being downed by the bucketful.

In 1823, James Pimm was a fishmonger who opened an oyster house in South London. He conceived the idea of selling, alongside his oysters, a drink that might aid digestion. So he concocted a gin-based liqueur infused with various herbs, spices, and quinine, then bottled it and labeled it “Pimm’s No. 1 Cup.”

Using his liqueur as the base, he then devised a delicious beverage, topping it up with sparkling lemonade, and piling chopped summer fruits on top. That, in essence, is what Pimm’s No. 1 is today. A mainstream current recipe specifies one part of Pimm’s to three parts of sparkling lemonade, topped with slices of orange, strawberry, and cucumber, together with a sprig of mint.

Over the two centuries since it first saw the light of day, the original gin-based Pimm’s has seen the birth of six variants. Only two – Cup 3 and Cup 6 – remain in production in addition to Pimm’s No. 1.

Pimm’s Nos. 2, 4, and 5 hit the market in the 1930s and left it in 1970. To produce them, the original recipe was altered by replacing the gin with, respectively, Scotch whisky, dark rum, and rye whisky. Pimm’s No. 3, which replaces the gin with brandy, has been introduced and withdrawn several times, but now dubbed Pimm’s Winter Cup, it has its fervent admirers and is currently available.

Pimm’s No. 6 Cup is a vodka-based variant that has had a checkered career, but it is now back by popular demand. The less said about Pimm’s No. 7 (a tequila-based variant), the better.

The experience of Pimm's

WHAT IS the sensual experience of actually imbibing a glass of Pimm’s?

To start with, it is an episode to be savored. You can’t down it in one go. You have a tall glass of sparkling liquor in front of you, with slices of fruit and cucumber floating on top, and a sprig of mint adorning one side. A few ice cubes are usual, though (it being England) not obligatory. Too much ice can deaden the taste. Often cold lemonade straight from the fridge will produce the result.

The first sip has a light alcoholic sensation, which is gently infused with herbs and spices; the taste is absolutely delicious from having been filtered through fresh fruit. As you sip your way through, you see the level of sliced orange, strawberry, and cucumber slowly sinking in the glass.

With your last swallow comes the climax of your Pimm’s encounter. Your final experience is to slide those delectable alcohol-imbued fruits from the glass and chew your way through them. Whether the whole event takes five minutes or half an hour, it is a unique experience, unlikely to be forgotten.

At home on a sun-drenched afternoon, people will usually make a jug of Pimm’s and take it to the garden to keep their guests well topped up. A standard recipe calls for a jugful of 200 ml. Pimm’s to 600 ml. of lemonade, with plenty of fruit, cucumbers, and mint to put on top.

Finally, to avoid all doubt, I must add that Pimm’s is totally unrelated to that other famous sparkling British alcoholic drink, Buck’s Fizz. This alcoholic cocktail is made of about two parts champagne (sometimes some other sparkling wine) to one part orange juice.

The drink is named after London’s Buck’s Club, where it is said to have been served first in 1921 by a barman named Malachi “Pat” McGarry. He features in the works of P.G. Wodehouse as the barman of the Drone’s Club. The original Buck’s Club recipe is said to contain additional ingredients known only to the club’s bartenders.

Buck’s Fizz is often drunk at Christmas and on New Year’s Eve and has no relationship to Pimm’s. Pimm’s time is summertime.

Cheers!
