A woman who allegedly claimed to be missing toddler Madeleine McCann pretended to be two other girls who had also vanished, a court has heard.

Julia Wandelt, 24, allegedly called and messaged Kate McCann, Madeleine's mother, 60 times in a day.

In one message Wandelt allegedly said she remembered Mrs McCann on the night of the abduction "rubbing my head and said I love you and you would find me".

Today, Leicester Crown Court heard that Wandelt did not limit her claims to being Madeleine, but two more girls.

The alleged stalker, from Lubin, southwest Poland, is on trial with Karen Spragg, 61, of Caerau Court Road, Caerau, Cardiff. They both deny stalking Kate and Madeleine's father Gerry McCann, causing serious alarm or distress, between June 2022 and February this year.

Wandelt contacted a charity called Missing Years Ago, which helps with historic missing persons cases, in January or February 2023, the court heard.

These dates "coincided with Julia Wandelt's assertion she was Madeleine McCann".

'I'm not a liar, I'm not crazy'

A voicemail left on Mrs McCann's phone was played to the jury, in which Wandelt allegedly said: "You have nothing to lose, if I'm her then everybody should be okay but if I'm not, as you probably think, then I will leave you alone.

"I know my accent is Polish because I live here, I know I look fat and I know I'm not pretty like Madeleine was in the past, but I know what I know, I know what I remember.

"Please just give me a chance, I'm not a liar, I'm not crazy - I just want to know the truth. Call me or message me or whatever please."

Prosecutor Michael Duck KC told the jury on Monday: "In the time between 2022 and her arrest in 2025, Julia Wandelt did not limit her claims to be a missing girl to the tragic case of Madeleine McCann.

"By the latter part of February 2023, she had now asserted she was potentially two different missing girls."

He added: "The initial contact with the charity was not to contend that she was Madeleine McCann but rather to suggest that she was another missing girl, Inga Gehricke.

"Inga was a young girl who had disappeared in Germany, but as with Madeleine McCann, Julia Wandelt was precluded from being a realistic candidate by virtue of her age and obvious differences."

The jury heard that, on a separate occasion, Wandelt claimed to be another missing girl called Acacia Bishop.

The trial will continue on 14 October.

Police in California stopped a car after seeing it do an illegal U-turn - only to discover it was driverless.

The Waymo was spotted making the manoeuvre "right in front" of officers at a light, San Bruno Police Department said.

"Since there was no human driver, a ticket couldn't be issued," it said, adding officers cannot book a "robot".

There was "no driver, no hands, no clue", the police department quipped, describing the experience as coming with a "plot twist".

The vehicle pulled over as soon as officers flashed their lights and sounded a siren.

They were then able to talk to someone from Waymo using equipment inside the car.

The police department said it was hopeful "reprogramming" would stop the vehicle from making any more illegal moves.

Legislation is being prepared to enable officers to issue notices directly to companies.

Waymo told Sky News' US partner network NBC it is "looking into the situation" and committed to improving safety through "ongoing learnings and experience".

The company has been operating autonomous cars in San Bruno since June.

Earlier in the year, another of its cars started driving around in circles.

Last year, Waymo was forced to fix a fleet of its cars after residents complained about their constant honking.

A Missouri woman was sentenced to nearly five years in prison for scheming to defraud the family of singer Elvis Presley of millions of dollars and steal their ownership interest in Presley's iconic Graceland estate, the US Justice Department said on Wednesday.

The department said in a written statement that US District Court Judge John Fowlkes in Memphis sentenced Lisa Jeanine Findley, 54, to four years and nine months in federal prison on Tuesday. Findley, who had faced up to 20 years in prison, pleaded guilty to mail fraud in February.

Findley organized a scheme to conduct a fraudulent sale of Graceland - Presley's former home which was opened to the public in 1982 and is designated as a National Historic Landmark - by falsely claiming Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie, had pledged the estate as collateral for a non-existent $3.8 million loan that she failed to repay before her death in 2023, the department has said.

Elvis Presley died in 1977 at the age of 42 and is buried on the grounds of Graceland.

The plot to steal Graceland

Findley, who used a fake company, forged documents and false court filings to carry out the scheme, threatened to foreclose the property and auction it to the highest bidder if the Presley family did not pay the claim against the estate, according to the department.

Lisa Marie's daughter, Riley Keough, who inherited the estate after her mother's death, sued Naussany Investments, the company Findley used in her attempt to auction Graceland, saying her mother had never taken out the loan and that Naussany was engaged in fraud.

The sale was blocked by a judge, which led Naussany last May to withdraw all claims to the property, a popular tourist attraction that draws more than 600,000 visitors a year.

Three elderly Austrian nuns angered authorities in September after escaping from their retirement home and running away to their former care home in the Alps, BBC News reported.

Sister Bernadette, 88, Sister Regina, 86, and Sister Rita, 82, were the last three nuns at the Kloster Goldenstein convent in Elsbethen before the convent closed its doors in December 2023. The nuns complained that they had not been asked and were removed from the building against their will. 

"We weren't asked," Sister Bernadette said. "We had the right to stay here until the end of our lives and that was broken."

The building was taken over by the Archdiocese of Salzburg and the Reichersberg Abbey in 2022, and the nuns had been promised a home there as long as they were mentally and physically able. However, in December 2023, officials decided to transfer them to a Catholic care home.

The nuns were able to return recently, thanks to the help of former students and a locksmith. The nuns found themselves back in their convent, but without electricity and running water - though many of the nuns’ supporters have dropped off supplies for them.

"I am so pleased to be home," Sister Rita told BBC News. "I was always homesick at the care home. I am so happy and thankful to be back."

The convent has a long history as both a home for women committing their lives to Christ and as a faith school. The institute began admitting girls for education in 1877 and began accepting male students in 2017. 

Austrian film actress Romy Schneider is one of the many former students to have walked the halls of the private school.

Defending the nuns' removal

In a statement, Provost Grasl said the nuns' return to the convent was "completely incomprehensible" and "an escalation." "The rooms in the convent are no longer usable and in no way meet the requirements for proper care," he said, while claiming the nuns had "precarious health conditions" which meant "that independent living at Goldenstein Convent was no longer possible."

The next NCIS installment sets it's premiere date

Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo‘s return to television — and the NCIS franchise — now has an exact date. The upcoming spinoff NCIS: Tony & Ziva, in which the duo reprise their fan-favorite roles from the mothership series, will debut September 4 with three episodes exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and a number of territories. Following the premiere, new episodes will drop weekly on Thursdays, with the season finale October 23.

Paramount+ also has released a key art of NCIS: Tony & Ziva that reflects the series’ pan-European setting. In the offshoot, former NCIS agents Tony (Weatherly) and Ziva (de Pablo) had been raising their daughter in Paris when an attack on Tony’s security company sends them on the run across Europe, trying to figure out who is after them and maybe even learn to trust each other again so they can finally have their unconventional happily ever after.

Tony & Ziva is the first series in the NCIS franchise not to air on CBS. It is unclear yet whether the show will get a special airing on the network.

“We’re beyond excited to finally share Tony and Ziva’s next chapter with the incredible fans around the world who never stopped believing this day would come,” said de Pablo and Weatherly.

They also teased what is to come in the 10-episode first season. “Returning to these roles together on screen after more than a decade has been an unforgettable journey packed with lies, spies, danger, desire … and self-driving murder cars. (Don’t worry, that last one will make sense soon). This is one wild ride you won’t want to miss, and as they say in Paris: Accrochez-vous bien!“

That translates to “Brace yourself” or “Hold on tight” in English.

Fans have been holding tight while showing their enthusiasm for de Pablo and Weatherly’s reunion, with the teaser trailer for Tony & Ziva amassing 93 million views across broadcast, social and digital in the seven days following its May 5 release.

In addition to de Pablo and Weatherly, NCIS: Tony & Ziva stars Amita Suman, Maximilian Osinski, Lara Rossi, Isla Gie, Nassima Benchicou, Terence Maynard, Julian Ovenden and James D’Arcy. The series is executive produced by John McNamara, who serves as showrunner, de Pablo, Weatherly, Laurie Lieser, Christina Strain, Shelley Meals and Mairzee Almas. Tony & Ziva is produced by CBS Studios and distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Ingredients

For the Salad:

• 6 oz. 

  shredded kale

• 1/2 

  small lemon, juiced

• 1 Tbsp. 

  extra-virgin olive oil

• 6 oz. 

  shredded vegetables, such as Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots

• 2 

  medium apples, cored and diced

• 1 1/2 c. 

  candied pecans

• 4 oz. 

  crumbled goat cheese

• 1 1/2 c. 

  roasted butternut squash

• 1/2 c. 

  pomegranate arils

For the Dressing:

• 1/2 c. 

  red wine vinegar

• 4 tsp. 

  whole grain or dijon mustard

• 4 tsp. 

  pure maple syrup

• 1 tsp. 

  kosher salt

• 1/2 tsp. 

  ground black pepper

• 1/2 c. 

  extra-virgin olive oil

Directions:

• 1. Place the shredded kale in a very large salad bowl. Add the lemon juice and oil. Use your hands to massage the lemon juice and oil into the greens, about a minute or so. The greens should wilt slightly and take on a deep green color.
  2. 2Add the other shredded vegetables to the bowl as well as the chopped apple.
  3. 3Make the dressing by combining all of the dressing ingredients in a mason jar. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds and then pour it over the salad. Toss well to combine.
  4. 4Add the pecans, goat cheese, butternut squash, and pomegranate arils on top. Serve.
     

Tip: To make roasted butternut squash, dice the squash into 1/2-inch pieces and place on a small baking sheet. Toss with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and a pinch or two of kosher salt. Roast at 425ºF until browned and soft, about 15 to 20 minutes.

Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries has been arrested on sex trafficking charges, a spokesperson for federal prosecutors has said.

Matthew Smith, Jeffries' partner, and a third man, James Jacobson, have also been arrested on the same charges.

At a news conference in New York, Breon Peace, the United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said Jeffries, 80, used his "power, his wealth and his influence, to traffic men for his own sexual pleasure and that of his romantic partner, Matthew Smith".

Mr Peace said the indictment alleged Jeffries and Smith, 61, employed Jacobson, 71, "to act as a recruiter to find men".

Jacobson would "engage in 'tryouts' with men across the world where he would typically pay them to engage in sex acts with him".

Smith would then decide who would meet him and Jeffries and the selected men would be flown to Jeffries' and Smith's homes or to hotels around the world "for the purpose of attending events to engage in commercial sex".

Mr Peace alleged all three defendants "used force, fraud and coercion to traffic those men for their own sexual gratification".

"They caused the men to believe that attending these sex events could yield modelling opportunities with Abercrombie or otherwise benefit their careers," Mr Peace alleged at a news conference.

"Smith and Jeffries employed a secret staff to operate these sex events. The staff ensured that the men signed non-disclosure agreements and handed over their personal items, such as their phones, before the start of the events to maintain the secrecy of these events."

James Dennehy, assistant director of the FBI's New York Field Office, said the indictment "highlights the abhorrent behaviour" of Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson.

He said the allegations are "not only beyond disturbing, dishonourable and disgraceful but simply put, it's criminal".

Jeffries has been released on bail after paying a $10m (£7.7m) bond.

Jacobson has been released on bail after paying a $500,000 (£385,069) bond.

Smith was detained.

Jeffries and Jacobson will be arraigned on Friday at 3pm local time at the federal courthouse in Long Island.

It comes after several sexual misconduct allegations - including a lawsuit filed in New York last year accusing Abercrombie of allowing Jeffries to run a sex trafficking organisation during his 22-year tenure.

Jeffries' attorney, Brian Bieber, said in an email to the Associated Press he would "respond in detail to the allegations after the indictment is unsealed, and when appropriate, but plan to do so in the courthouse - not the media".

Lawyers for Smith did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A lawyer for Jacobson could not immediately be reached for comment.

Lawyers for Jeffries and Smith have previously "vehemently denied" any wrongdoing.

Jeffries left Abercrombie & Fitch in 2014.

Abercrombie last year said it had hired an outside law firm to conduct an independent investigation after a report on similar allegations was aired by the BBC.

Abercrombie & Fitch has declined to comment on Jeffries' arrest.
