Man seeks to restore US status after ICE officers mistake opium perfume for drugs

Indian national Kapil Raghu spent a month in an immigration facility after authorities confused a bottle of Opium perfume with drugs.

Police thought bottle contained drugs and arrested Kapil Raghu.

Indian national Kapil Raghu is seeking to have his US visa returned to him after US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers detained him for a month after mistaking a bottle of opium perfume for illegal substances, according to recent US media reports.

The charges against Raghu were dropped, though he was detained for a month after initially being pulled over for a traffic violation on May 3, 2025, according to his attorney Mike Laux. While searching his car, authorities discovered the perfume bottle labelled “Opium” and arrested him for possession of narcotics.

Local network THV11 recovered bodycam footage of the officers, showing Raghu explaining that the bottle was only a popular fragrance.

“You got a vial of opium that was in your center console,” an officer told Raghu. “Go and take a seat.”

Raghu, who lives in Arkansas with his American wife, was working toward gaining American citizenship at the time of his arrest.

The Arkansas State Crime Lab confirmed the contents of the bottle were perfume, not drugs but Raghu still spent three days in the Saline County jail, where authorities found an “administrative/legal error” showing his visa status had expired, according to his attorney. After the three days in jail, ICE officials transported Raghu to an immigration facility in Louisiana for a month.

The long term impact

“She used to call me every night,” Raghu told THV11. “Crying, and my stepdaughter putting a Bible on her chest, crying. My stepdaughter was crying a lot. And she [Mays] was planning to sell her cars and move to some other country where we can live happily.”

The drug charges against Ragu were officially dropped on May 20, but the ICE detainment has resulted in difficulties in his citizenship journey and the family is now seeking to fundraise to help cover their legal and basic expenses.

“It is my understanding that, though released, Kapil now has a ‘deportation’ status, meaning he can be immediately deported for any minor offense, even jaywalking,” Laux shared in a statement. “But, more crucially, this classification bars him from working and earning money for his family, which has been devastating for them.”

Raghu has now written to the ICE legal office, and explained his case and formally asked whether his immigration status could be resolved.

Raghu said that his immigration attorney had “failed to timely file the required paperwork before my visa expired, which left me vulnerable and placed me in my current situation”.

“My wife, who has always been my greatest support, is carrying the entire financial burden alone, as I am currently unable to work,” Raghu wrote. “The mounting legal fees and the pressure of not being able to contribute have created a difficult situation for our family, and it has become increasingly challenging to manage.”

A 10-year-old girl lay unconscious on a ventilator in the intensive-care unit at Garrahan Children’s Hospital in Buenos Aires after surgeons worked through the night to rebuild her face and save her left eye. A metal fragment from a classroom volcano experiment gone horribly wrong penetrated her skull, prompting doctors at Hospital San JosΓ© in Pergamino to summon a provincial helicopter for an emergency transfer, reported Rosario3.

The blast erupted Thursday evening during the Instituto Comercial Rancagua’s annual science fair, where parents, teachers, and students gathered around tabletop demonstrations. A volcano model—packed with powdered sulfur, charcoal, and what investigators called a “special salt” that matched the formula for gunpowder—detonated without warning. “Don’t get close, kids,” a teacher shouted moments before a fireball shot upward and metal tubing burst, according to cellphone video verified by Milenio.

Cata, seated in the front row, absorbed the force of the shrapnel, suffering severe burns and catastrophic eye and brain trauma. Eleven other students, four parents, and two teachers were injured. Most left Hospital San JosΓ© the same night with minor burns, contusions, or smoke inhalation, but a 45-year-old teacher underwent two operations at San Felipe Hospital in San NicolΓ‘s and lost sight in her left eye, relatives told La NaciΓ³n.

Written with the help of a news-analysis system.

“It was a tremendous roar, everyone started to scream,” said a mother standing near the display, according to La OpiniΓ³n. “There were kids with bloodied faces and parents who didn’t know what to do.”

Mayor Javier MartΓnez confirmed that the projectile “affected deep areas of the girl’s face and even part of her brain,” adding that the school’s management team could face criminal charges, La NaciΓ³n reported. MartΓnez noted that gunpowder “is not common for experiments” and likely amplified the explosion.

Prosecutor Fernando Pertierra opened a judicial inquiry, ordered forensic tests, and took statements from the school director, the institution’s legal representative, and the supervising chemistry teacher. Investigators sealed the classroom and courtyard while Scientific Police sifted through debris.

The Buenos Aires provincial Education Ministry suspended all activities at the school and announced plans to tighten safety controls and update prevention manuals, reported La Voz del Interior. Residents in Pergamino and the nearby town of Rancagua organized prayer chains across social media, urging, “Let’s use our networks to maximize the energy and let it reach Cata and her family,” shared La NaciΓ³n. Doctors at Garrahan Hospital described the child’s condition as stable but uncertain after complex maxillofacial surgery, Milenio noted.

North Korean Communist Party members have ordered authorities to search women for “unsocialist,” “bourgeois” breast implants, according to international media reports.

The plan to search women for breast implants follows the trial of two young women, both in their 20s, accused of undergoing an underground breast enhancement surgery, according to the Telegraph.

The women were said to have had implants that were illegally transported from China and implanted by a medical student who dropped out of university. North Korean authorities allegedly searched the home of the former student and found a room where he carried out his procedures filled with surgical devices, cash, and imported silicone.

Sariwon neighborhood watch leaders were ordered to identify the women who underwent the procedure, and both were taken to the hospital to confirm whether they had undergone surgery on their breasts.

Prosecutors accused the woman of having become “tainted by bourgeois customs” and claimed they were “engaging in rotten capitalist behaviour.”

If found guilty, the women face being sent to a labor camp, according to the South Korean site Daily NK.

In the public proceedings, the judge shamed the breast augmentation surgery as an “un-socialist act” and said one of the defendants “had no intention of being loyal to the organization and group, but was obsessed with vanity and ended up becoming a poisonous weed that was eating away at the socialist system.”

The case follows an arrest in July, after an oral surgeon was accused of performing two botched breast enlargement procedures on a woman in the same city.

Fashion in North Korea

The strict pariah country has numerous rules restricting cosmetic procedures and the aesthetic choices of its citizens. In 2021, the country banned mullets, nose piercings, and skinny jeans, according to Business Insider. Spiky and dyed hair were also banned.

Earlier this year, four young adults faced being sent to labour camps for a year after they were said to be caught "talking like South Koreans," according to the Mirror.

One source told publication Daily NK, "These days, young people are careful to avoid South Korean speech during official activities because they know about the crackdowns, but when they’re with friends, they use it without hesitation—mimicking lines from South Korean movies and shows. They copy the patterns quite naturally, probably because they’ve grown up watching this content.”

The UN also recently found North Korea executed people for watching South Korean television.

A woman who allegedly claimed to be missing toddler Madeleine McCann pretended to be two other girls who had also vanished, a court has heard.

Julia Wandelt, 24, allegedly called and messaged Kate McCann, Madeleine's mother, 60 times in a day.

sleep in their holiday apartment in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz.

In one message Wandelt allegedly said she remembered Mrs McCann on the night of the abduction "rubbing my head and said I love you and you would find me".

Today, Leicester Crown Court heard that Wandelt did not limit her claims to being Madeleine, but two more girls.

The alleged stalker, from Lubin, southwest Poland, is on trial with Karen Spragg, 61, of Caerau Court Road, Caerau, Cardiff. They both deny stalking Kate and Madeleine's father Gerry McCann, causing serious alarm or distress, between June 2022 and February this year.

Wandelt contacted a charity called Missing Years Ago, which helps with historic missing persons cases, in January or February 2023, the court heard.

These dates "coincided with Julia Wandelt's assertion she was Madeleine McCann".

Madeleine McCann went missing in 2007

'I'm not a liar, I'm not crazy'

A voicemail left on Mrs McCann's phone was played to the jury, in which Wandelt allegedly said: "You have nothing to lose, if I'm her then everybody should be okay but if I'm not, as you probably think, then I will leave you alone.

"I know my accent is Polish because I live here, I know I look fat and I know I'm not pretty like Madeleine was in the past, but I know what I know, I know what I remember.

"Please just give me a chance, I'm not a liar, I'm not crazy - I just want to know the truth. Call me or message me or whatever please."

Prosecutor Michael Duck KC told the jury on Monday: "In the time between 2022 and her arrest in 2025, Julia Wandelt did not limit her claims to be a missing girl to the tragic case of Madeleine McCann.

"By the latter part of February 2023, she had now asserted she was potentially two different missing girls."

He added: "The initial contact with the charity was not to contend that she was Madeleine McCann but rather to suggest that she was another missing girl, Inga Gehricke.

"Inga was a young girl who had disappeared in Germany, but as with Madeleine McCann, Julia Wandelt was precluded from being a realistic candidate by virtue of her age and obvious differences."

The jury heard that, on a separate occasion, Wandelt claimed to be another missing girl called Acacia Bishop.

The trial will continue on 14 October.

Police in California stopped a car after seeing it do an illegal U-turn - only to discover it was driverless.

The Waymo was spotted making the manoeuvre "right in front" of officers at a light, San Bruno Police Department said.

"Since there was no human driver, a ticket couldn't be issued," it said, adding officers cannot book a "robot".

There was "no driver, no hands, no clue", the police department quipped, describing the experience as coming with a "plot twist".

The vehicle pulled over as soon as officers flashed their lights and sounded a siren.

They were then able to talk to someone from Waymo using equipment inside the car.

The police department said it was hopeful "reprogramming" would stop the vehicle from making any more illegal moves.

Legislation is being prepared to enable officers to issue notices directly to companies.

Waymo told Sky News' US partner network NBC it is "looking into the situation" and committed to improving safety through "ongoing learnings and experience".

The company has been operating autonomous cars in San Bruno since June.

Earlier in the year, another of its cars started driving around in circles.

Last year, Waymo was forced to fix a fleet of its cars after residents complained about their constant honking.
